insurance company claiming money correct ?

Hallo, My wife was worked as a student(internship) for 3 months in 2006. We were informed
to krankenkasse when she start her intership and earned some money during that period.
Now in 2008, krankenkasse claming money , telling that during that period she was considered as a student
and should pay 57Euro each month. what the insurance company, claiming is correct? If yes, why they
didnot claim this in 2007 eventhough we were informed this to them and also krankenkasse denied to pay
money when my wife took leave because of my daughter illness,
saying that students does not get money because of it.
Meanwhile they increase the rate and I quit my krankenkasse.
