Formalities after giving birth!!
Halo,
Could anyone tell me what are the formalities that a new parent have to do after a child is born in Germany?
We are expecting a child soon and want to make sure we do all the official formalities properly.

hi
as far as i remember the following needs to be done.
1. You need to register your child name after the birth. you have to do it usually in 2 days after the birth and mostly in hospitals there is a department which handles this matters. They let you know the process, how long does it take to get the birth certificates and so on..
2. Inform your health insurance.
3. apply for the passport.
4. after getting passport you need to get a visa for him/her.( usually u have to do it before the child gets 6 months. please confirm with others too this point)
These are the things i have in mind if i remember some then i will post again. We also have here our valuable minds and they already sharing the missing points!!

One more thing:
- After getting birth certificate, apply for kindergeld and Elterngeld

Where should one apply for eltern and kindergeld??
is there a time limit to do so after a child is born??

When you go to pick your baby's birth certificate in standesamt, they will provide you the addresses of elterngeld and kindergeld offices.
You can call them and ask them about the time.
