Guys please help.
am I allowed to change my steuerklasse in the middle of the year? Can one pair have for instance steuerklasse 3/5 for the first 5 months and steuerklasse 4/4 for the last 7 months in a year.
Or is it that one can have only one combination either 3/5 or 4/4 for the whole year. Even then can this combination be change in the middle of the year.

As a married couple, you have only two possibilities:
4/4 both pay pretty much as steuerklasse 1
3/5 where 3 is lower tax rate and 5 is higher.
you can chose who takes 3 and who takes 5. one has to calculate and decide which situation is the best combination.

To get the most out of it, unless you both have the same salary, you have to choose the combination 3/5 with the 3 for the one who earns the most.

What about a newly married couple where only 1 of them is working? He/she can immidiately switch to class 3, right?

Hi,
it doesn't really matter. Only you get/loose the money now or when you declare the tax.
Class 3/5 have to declare tax - If I amn't mistaken.!

What if the wife is not working and you have a baby...should it be still Tax class 3 or something else makes more sense?

in case you're married, you get the class 3, with or without kid and you will stay like that until
1. your wife moves to another country, then you need to switch back to class 1
2. you want your wife to get a Lohnsteuerkarte, then you will be requested to either change to class 3 so your wife will get class 5, or you choose a combination 4/4 or 5/3.
