Hello,
I have submitted my workpermit application from India 3 weeks back. When I checked with consulate here, they mentioned to me that, they have forwarded it to Germany ("but online", they mentioned). Does this mean that I can ask my future employer to contact the Auslaenderbehoerde and try to do some follow up there? Should my employer call up Auslaenderbehoerde or some other office?
Any help in this regard would be appreciated.

Ask your employer to enquire from ABH and may be they can contact 'Agentuur für Arbeit' directly to know the work permit status. You can also come to know whether ABH has recieved your application from the consulate.
Which city are you going to? You can also send an email to ABH in German enquiring about the status.

Thanks stutt for your quick reply.
The consulate phone lines here are open only for 3hrs, four days in a week. The lines are busy most of the time and the people answering are also a bit arrogant. I somehow managed to extract the above information from them that they have prossed my application and submitted it online to Germany (it could mean that the documents harcopy are on the way).
I will be going to Pforzheim. I will ask my employer to contact Pforzheim ABH.

Dont bother to contact the consulate for the status.
