Freelancer?

Hi folks,

I am leaving Germany after three years of work on the green visa. Reason: illness of one of my family's members.

My employer is now offering me a new contract, where I would continue working as "freier Mitarbeiter". Most of the work would be done in my country of origin (six hours by car from Germany), and I would travel to Germany as needed.

Most important question is: is this legal? (To work as freier Mitarbeiter, although my green card gets invalid in a couple of weeks?)

I ask this because I wouldn't want to do anything that could be characterized as illegal by German authorities later on. Thanks for any pointers.
