Beschäftigung erlaubt for PhD

Hi ,

I was wondering Beschäftigung erlaubt applies for PhD students, who will be having §18 visa as a wissenschaftler mitarbeiter?

Does any one have experience with PhD's and unbound work visas? For how long it will be issued? Your comments and suggestions will be appreciated.
