Elterzeit and Visa Validity

I have been working for a German Company for 4 years.
I have a one year old son , I joined work soon after the maternity leave.My son is one year old now .As I can take leave for child care (elternzeit ,till the child is 3 years old ) I want to take one year leave and spend this time in India. My company will keep my contract but I am not sure whether my visa will get automatically invalid after 6 months . I am giving away my current apartment , as I can't pay rent for one year .I have a work permit till 2006 May.(It is not green card)
If anyone have knowledge about it , please reply.
