Residence permit duration and fees

Hi all,

I and my wife got the 3 months valid Germany visa now and we are ready to move to Germany. We will then apply there to convert our visas to the residence and work permits at Auslaenderbehoerde.

Do you know how long will this converting process take and how much will it cost? I would appreciate a real quick answer.

Thanks

Re: Residence permit duration and fees

Merhaba Koray,

I strongly advise you should go to Ausländerbehörde, as soon as you have arrived in Germany. Do it in your first week if possible, although your German visa is valid for 3 months.

I think you have a type-D visa and it is valid for Germany and not for Schengen countries. Therefore you cannot travel to other EU countries unless you go to Ausländerbehörde, because you have a visa for Germany only. Seems you will be working in Germany, type-D visa is given to such a case to enter the country.

The converting process shouldn't take too much time, waiting at most half a day. Most of the offices are open only half day.

The cost of residence permit is about 51 Euro for 5 years (1 person). If you are coming as a Highly qualified Specialist (like scientist, or a PhD guy for a qualified position) you can immediately get Niederlassungserlaubnis for Hochqualifizierte (unlimited residence permit) for I think 200 euro.

After having converted the visa to residence permit, you can go wherever want in EU (ie. you can leave Germany).

Merhaba Klenze17,

Thank you for the clear answer. I now do not know the duration of my residence permit. Do you know how long do they give generally at the auslaenderbehoerde?

Thank you very much!

Selam Koray,

Thank you for the clear answer. I now do not know the duration of my residence permit. Do you know how long do they give generally at the auslaenderbehoerde?

It's dependent upon the duration of your job contract. If you have an unlimited job contract, you can get max. 5 years at once. And be careful with your validity of passport. Turkish passports can be valid max. 5 years, so max. time can be as much as your passport can cover with its validity. After 5 years you can lengthen your residence permit or you can get unlimited residence permit. This is common practice.

If your contract is limited, then your residence permit can be max. the duration of your job contract.

Some officials can give you shorter residence permits, although your contract can be unlimited. So this is their behaviour. I strongly advise you to be polite to them. Speaking German also has a good reputation. The officials are friendly people but having a good behaviour, a smiling face also increase the chance that the officials give you max. time. They have the right to restrict the duration of residence permit, with given facts.

Re: Residence permit duration and fees

Hi Klenze17,

I would like to schedule our trip now and my wife will have to be back to Turkey after the registration, so are you sure it will take only half a day to get the permit at the auslaenderbehoerde and get registered for both of us and register for the different tax level? How much time do I need to consider do you think? How long did yours take?

Thanks

Re: Residence permit duration and fees

Iyi aksamlar Koray,

the time at Ausländerbehörde is totally dependent upon the work load, mood of the officials and your reputation. All of your things can finish in one hour, can take up to 1-2 days. Generally it mustn't take longer than a half day.

Registration of tax level takes maybe just 5 minutes. It is nothing more than that the official gives you a tax card for the year, that's all.

Check if the tax card and residence permit is given at the same building. In some states it is done in the same place (Bezirksamt).

Ask the official friendly, how long it might take to finish your formalities. If you ask him friendly, you will get a realistic answer.

Mine took just 1 hour. Don't force the officials to speed up the procedure, it will have a negative effect. Also, don't forget that your wife cannot leave Germany (not EU, be careful!) for longer than 6 months, otherwise she will immediately lose her residence permit according to AufenthG, §51, item 7.
